FAQs
Do I have to pay for an estimate? No, we are happy to provide you with a free estimate. Are you a licensed? Yes, we carry a class C contractor’s license as required by the JCCL as well as various municipal licenses when required. Are you insured? Yes, we carry policies for both liability and worker’s compensation as required by law. You will receive copies of both policies with your bid. Do I need a permit? It depends, not all cities require a permit for work. If you live in a city that does require one, we will provide it for you. Are you a member of the Better Business Bureau? Yes, we are an “Honor Roll” member of the Kansas City Better Business Bureau. An honor roll member is one that has never received a single complaint. Please look us or our competitors up at www.kansascity.bbb.org What is Angie’s List? Angie’s List is an organization & website that compiles homeowner ratings & reviews of companies in the service industry (e.g. roofing companies).  Homeowners can both contribute to the list & review other member’s experiences. Currently Westwood Roofing has retained an A rating, the highest possible average rating on the list. We are also proud to have received the Angie’s List “Super Service Award” for the years 2006, 2007 & 2008.  This award is attained by less than 5% of Angie’s List companies. You check out us or our competitors at www.angieslist.com Are you Certified Installers? We are proud to be a select member of the Certainteed Professional Roofer’s Advisory Council. We are also certified at the highest level as a GAF/ELK Master Elite Roofing Company. GAF/ELK Materials Corporation is the largest and oldest roofing manufacturer in North America. They also manufacturer’s the most popular series of shingles available known as Timberline as well as many other roofing products and shingle styles. Only 2% of roofing companies nationally attain this level of certification with GAF/ELK. Not only does this provide you with the peace of mind that you’ve selected one of the most reputable and reliable companies for quality workmanship and service, it also provides our customers with the best warranties available in the industry. In order to maintain this status we are required to adhere to a strict list of quality material & installation requirements and some instances pass roof inspections by GAF/ELK representatives. GAF/ELK also sends surveys out following the registration of your warranty and we are happy to report a long list of satisfied customers. You can check these out as well as our competitors as www.gaf.com . With your bid you will receive brochures explaining in depth the warranty advantages of using a GAF/ELK Certified Master Elite Roofing Company and also please feel free to ask your sales representative for a further explanation of how these certifications benefit you. Do you require a down payment before work can begin? No, we will bill you upon completion. However, we do require and appreciate prompt payment upon completion in order to offer this service. We do accept personal checks, cashiers checks, and/or cash. Can I pay with my credit card? Unfortunately we do not accept payment by credit cards due to the 1% to 4% service charge we incur when processing credit card payments. We want to be as competitive as possible and because there is little precedent for accepting credit cards among our competitor’s we are unable to do so while maintaining competitive pricing. We will be happy to accept credit card access checks as these do not have a processing fee, however you should be aware that as the card holder you may incur a fee when using these and should check with your credit card company first. What are the IRC and IBC? International Residential Code & International BuildingCode The IRC and IBC are an international building codes council. The IRC and IBC codes have been adopted by Johnson County, Jackson County, and the municipalities throughout the greater Kansas City area. Westwood Roofing strictly complies with all building codes put forth by the IRC & IBC. What type of roofing materials do you use? We will use only premium roofing materials; however there are many styles and brands of quality roofing shingles available. We install both composition fiberglass asphalt shingles and wood shingles, and are happy to make suggestions, provide samples, or addresses of homes for you to look at. If you have a preference for a specific style or brand, please let us know. What is the difference between OSB & CDX plywood decking? Both ½” CDX & 7/16” OSB are approved as roof decking by IRC & IBC codes. CDX is traditional cross laminated veneered sheets pressed & glued together while OSB (oriented strand board) is an engineered decking consisting of wood strands randomly patterned and pressed together with a waterproof wax and glue. Do not confuse OSB with wafer board or chip board, it is a vastly different product specifically engineered for roofing & siding. Although you won’t have to look too hard for differing opinions on which is better, the simple truth is, installed correctly both products will make for a quality roof deck. At Westwood Roofing we prefer to use OSB. Although all lumber is a commodity and prices can fluctuate greatly in a short amount of time, OSB is generally cheaper to produce and more environmentally sustainable. It is also slightly stronger than CDX and in our experience has been more durable and less likely to warp or de-laminate when exposed to water through either direct contact or humidity.  Feel free to ask your sales representative for more in depth information on differences between these products and there pricing.
